  • Have you got an innovative solution to support the transition to a low-carbon society?

The Fashion industry, with one of the most environmentally damaging supply chains, accounts for approximately 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Fast fashion is the biggest contributor to the environmental impact of the industry, particularly due to the use of toxic chemicals and the increasing levels of textile waste. Concerns are mounting, and, if growth in the industry continues on the same trajectory, it is estimated that textiles would account for close to 25% of the total global allowable carbon emissions by 2050.

One of the solutions tackling the damaging environmental impacts in the fashion industry is the adoption of circular economy principles. Some leading fashion brands have supported the move to circular fashion; for example, H&M has announced a target to become 100% circular by 2030. In addition, the UN has contributed to the development of circular fashion with the launch of a UN fashion industry charter to scale-up low carbon-production methods. Innovative ideas in the fashion industry to improve its sustainability include the development of materials which are less resource dependent, more recyclable and have longer lifecycles.

Shell LiveWIRE alumnus, Petit Pli, has developed an innovative solution to reduce waste in the fashion industry. Petit Pli has developed clothing for children that expands as the child grows, extending the usage life of the clothes. Ryan Yasin, co-founder of Petit Pli, said he believes that entrepreneurs are essential to the transition to a low-carbon society, particularly due to their capacity and freedom to develop disruptive technologies.
