  • Sustainable Cities: Meet the start-ups utilising technology to change our cities

Our cities need innovative solutions to help them to become more sustainable. Find out how two Shell LiveWIRE alumni are rolling out innovative technologies allowing their cities to thrive.

First up, we have April 2018’s winner George Kalligeros, co-founder of Pushme Bikes. George’s start-up provides cleaner energy solutions for urban transportation, using an innovative device that converts conventional peddle bikes to electric in a matter of minutes. The innovation, which includes a bicycle converter and a network of battery swap stations, is targeted at delivery couriers. The aim is to tempt couriers away from petrol scooters, creating a cleaner solution to an otherwise polluting industry.

ChargedUp aims to reduce the carbon footprint of our smart phone use in the UK: conventional electricity generation is responsible for 30% of Britain’s carbon emissions and it is this electricity that we use to charge our phones. The ChargedUp sharing network enables customers to rent a battery pack, charged using renewable energy, from locations around London. Co-founder, Hugo Tilmouth won the Smarter Future Award in June 2017 and since then ChargedUp has set up more than 250 battery stations across London.

From green urban transportation to smart phone charging networks, sustainable solutions come in all shapes and sizes. Are you inspired to find a solution for your city? How can your innovation provide a clean solution to help us to be more sustainable in the cities we live in?
